What is an explosion-proof light and where is it needed?
An explosion-proof luminaire is built for areas where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present in the air. There, an ordinary spark or hot surface can become an ignition source, so the housing, glass, sealing, cable entries and surface temperature are designed so that an internal ignition is not transmitted outside and the surface stays below its permitted temperature. The difference from a standard industrial light is not just the IP rating: the protection type (e.g. Ex db or Ex tb), gas group, temperature class and certificate are marked on the nameplate, and the choice must match the area classification. Refineries, petrochemical units, fuel stations and dusty process areas are typical examples.
Golnoor explosion-proof families
The Golnoor explosion-proof range covers lighting (LED floodlight and linear luminaire), power distribution (junction box) and local control (control station). All products on this page are specified for Zones 1 and 2 (gas) and 21 and 22 (dust), with copper-free aluminium housings.
Atria explosion-proof floodlight
LED floodlight for hazardous areas and a modern replacement for discharge lamps. 100 W (15,000 lm) and 200 W (30,000 lm), symmetric or asymmetric distribution, borosilicate glass, IP66/IP67, −20 to +55 °C. Pole, surface or wall mounting. Marking Ex db IIC T6 Gb and Ex tb IIIC T85°C Db; certificate ECM 23 ATEX 6134 X.
Asteria LED explosion-proof linear luminaire
Linear LED luminaire in three lengths (465, 715 and 1325 mm), 15–60 W and 2,330–10,000 lm — the LED replacement for explosion-proof fluorescent fittings. Ceiling, pendant, wall or pole mounting, FBE coating, IP66, −30 to +55 °C ambient. The emergency version (EL) provides about 1.5 hours from its built-in battery.
GJB explosion-proof junction box
Junction and distribution box for hazardous areas in five types (GJB1–GJB5), 690 V, IP66/IP67, −20 to +55 °C. Marking Ex db IIC T6/T5/T4 Gb and Ex tb IIIC T85/T100°C Db; certificate ECM 18 ATEX 2444 X.
GLCS explosion-proof control station
Local control station for operating equipment inside the hazardous area, types GLCS1 and GLCS3 with up to four operators (start/stop, selector, signal lamp, emergency stop). 600 V, IP66/IP67, marking Ex db IIC T6 Gb and Ex tb IIIC T85°C Db; certificate ECM 23 ATEX 0603 X.

Zones and Ex marking in brief
Hazardous areas are classified by how likely an explosive atmosphere is; the project's safety engineer defines the zones. Equipment must suit that zone or a stricter one.
- Zone 0 / 1 / 2 (gas and vapour): present continuously or for long periods; likely in normal operation; unlikely and only briefly.
- Zone 20 / 21 / 22 (dust): the same logic for combustible dust.
- Ex db: flameproof enclosure — an internal ignition does not propagate outside. Ex tb: protection by enclosure against dust.
- IIC: the most demanding gas group (e.g. hydrogen, acetylene), also covering IIA and IIB. IIIC: conductive dust.
- T6: maximum surface temperature 85 °C (T5: 100 °C, T4: 135 °C).
- Gb / Db: equipment protection level suitable for Zones 1–2 (gas) and 21–22 (dust).
Applications
- Refineries and oil & gas process units
- Petrochemical and chemical plants
- Fuel, CNG and gas stations (within classified areas)
- Flammable material stores and tank farms
- Paint booths and paint shops
- Grain silos and combustible dust areas
- Industrial workshops and corrosive environments
How to choose an explosion-proof light
- Zone: 1 or 2 for gas, 21 or 22 for dust
- Gas group (IIA, IIB, IIC) or dust group (IIIC)
- Temperature class matched to the ignition temperature
- Protection type and EPL on the nameplate (e.g. Ex db … Gb)
- IP rating and ambient temperature range
- Housing material and coating for corrosive sites
- Mounting type and cable entries (M20 or M25)
- Emergency lighting requirement
- Certificate number and technical documents
- LDT photometric file for lighting calculation
Hazardous-area lighting design in DIALux
LDT files for Atria (2 models) and Asteria LED (20 models) are available on each product page. Get DIALux evo and the Golnoor plugin from the DIALux page, calculate illuminance and spacing for the real space, then select the model and wattage.
Download DIALux and the Golnoor pluginClear certificates and marking
Each product page lists its certificate number and Ex marking, making it easier to match project requirements and handover documents.
Copper-free aluminium housings
Copper-free aluminium in RAL 7072 with borosilicate glass on the luminaires; Asteria LED adds an FBE coating.
Lighting, distribution and control
Luminaires, junction boxes and control stations are specified for the same zones and can be combined in one project.
Technical documents available
The explosion-proof catalogue PDF, installation manuals, product images and luminaire LDT files are available from product pages and the download page.
